“He could have gone on to become a doctor” – a “nightmarish” scenario.
Thus said the judge who sentenced a former Brigham Young University-Idaho student to jail time and probation for “altering his college transcript and qualifying himself for $7,000 in academic scholarships,” the Post Register reports.
Jacob Mahonri Espinal, a student employee in the records and registration office, went from a “failing pre-med student to a straight A student” after fudging with his grades in the system. It nabbed him $7,000 in academic scholarships.
Judge Greg Moehller called him a thief:
“Basically he stole a spot in the university from somebody, stole grades that he didn’t earn, stole credit didn’t earn and potentially damaged the reputation of the university.”
