ANALYSIS: Comedian is ‘racist’ for saying Indians ‘still poop in streets,’ but no biggie when student uses implied threat
The University of Michigan chapter of Turning Point USA hosted “conservative comedian and provocateur” Alex Stein last Thursday, and via part of its headline the student newspaper appeared more concerned about Stein’s alleged racism than a student’s implied threat against him.
Referring to Stein as “right-wing” in that headline as well, The Michigan Daily highlighted the comedian’s remarks about Indians (from India) during his debate with a student over H-1B visas, the holders of which are 70 percent Indian.
“I mean, because we have an overabundance of people that are using H-1B visas to scam the system and take jobs from college graduates like yourself,” Stein told the student, identified as a “founding member” of the leftist Human Rights Party.
“So you think Indians are better at tech than Americans?” Stein inquired. “A country that’s literally developed no technology whatsoever? They still poop in the streets, they literally worship the cow and drink cow urine.”
The student, who later defended Stein’s right of free speech, nevertheless claimed the comedian was “hypocritical” for opposing “gender-affirming” care, but then using “the mistreatment of LGBTQ people by Hamas as a justification for being pro-Israel.”
Daily reporter Jacob Reich apparently isn’t familiar with the term “comedian” as he noted Stein “often responded to debaters jokingly,” such as during a chat about legal immigration.
Reich wrote Stein considers “women’s bodies as a measure of who he thinks should be able to stay in the country” because he said “big booty Asians — they can stay, that’s cool with me. Everybody likes Asian chicks.”
Stein said this included “big booty Indians” too, because his friend Priya Patel is “very attractive.”
Reich also referenced Stein’s past comment about U.S. Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez as his “favorite big booty Latina.”
Consider, however, how Reich framed what amounts to an implied threat against Stein from a student who debated him on DEI initiatives:
At the end of their conversation with Stein, the speaker made an allusion to the killing of TPUSA co-founder Charlie Kirk, telling him to ‘Watch out for a hole in the neck‘ (emphasis added). The individual walked away from Stein without confronting any TPUSA event staffers or police officers that were present.
At around 28 minutes into video of the event (above), the transcript reads “Watch out for a hole in the day,” although it’s fairly clear he says “neck.” (Of note, the video appears incomplete as certain references noted in The Daily story, like the mention of Priya Patel, are not included.)
In an article the day before, Reich referred to progressive pundit Hasan Piker — who appeared in support of U.S. Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed along with UM Board of Regents candidate Amir Makled — merely as “controversial,” and noted others who have “called him” antisemitic, despite his overt statements to that effect.
These include “It doesn’t matter if f***ing rapes happened on October 7 […] the Palestinian resistance is not perfect,” that ultra-Orthodox Jews are “in-bred,” that Hamas is “a thousand times better” than Israel, and that he has “no problem” with the terror group Hezbollah.
